Home / Natural Beauty / Bakuchiol serum vs. retinol – which one should I choose?

Bakuchiol serum vs. retinol – which one should I choose?

If you’ve been doing your skincare homework, then you’ll have discovered that retinol happens to have a younger, more gentle sister called bakuchiol.

While older sis, retinol, may be used to taking all the glory for many years, bakuchiol’s been patiently waiting in the wings for her moment to finally arrive. And that moment, is now.

    The rise of bakuchiol

Granted – bakuchiol serum isn’t a skincare product we’re used to talking about (or getting our tongues around pronouncing) half as much as retinol, but it’s actually got some qualities that are really giving retinol a run for its money.

There’s bakuchiol serum, as well as creams and oils that come in all different types of textures and colours, just to add another level of detail to the overall decision-making process. However, it’s important to note here, that while retinol and bakuchiol may be ‘sisters’ bakuchiol isn’t a retinol, but it has been called a true alternative to retinol1.

So how does lil’ sis work?

Like retinol, bakuchiol works by help boosting the skin’s regeneration process. As a result, skin looks more plumped and smoother and this can help minimise the appearance of wrinkles. Over time, skin can look brighter and clearer.

Because it’s an antioxidant, one of bakuchiol’s strengths is its ability to help alleviate the signs of aging. Antioxidants work by counteracting free radicals – those harmful atoms that are responsible for damaging cells and causing dry and loose skin, as well as fine lines and wrinkles.

The antioxidant status combined with bakuchiol’s natural, plant-based origins, means it can be applied twice daily – ideally, to dry skin before cleansing or before applying moisturiser.

    Decisions, decisions…

The good news? Another amazing product has entered the skincare arena – yey! The not so good news, you may find yourself in a bit of quandary about which product to use – bakuchiol serum, cream or oil, or retinol?

To help you make you make up your mind, here’s a list of the some of the main benefits of both products, starting with new kid on the block, bakuchiol:

    Bakuchiol – the benefits

    1. Has natural properties – it’s extracted from the leaves and seeds of the Psoralea Corylifolia plant, which is also called the ‘babchi’ plant.
    2. Can be used twice a day – because it’s not a Vitamin A derivative, like retinol, and not as irritating to the skin2
    3. Can help collagen production – according to research, it may improve the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles and pigmentation3
    4. Isn’t impacted by sun exposure – unlike retinol, it won’t break down in the sun or make skin more sensitive to UV rays4
    5. It’s vegan-friendly – thanks to its natural, plant-based roots.

    Retinol – the benefits

    1. Can help reduce the signs of ageing – research has found that it can help with reducing the appearance of wrinkles5
    2. There are different types according to your skin type – i.e. sensitive, ageing or blemish prone skin
    3. Has antioxidant properties – that can help with reducing the appearance of uneven skin.

Bakuchiol serum or retinol? Which one will you choose? Best of luck with making the decision and finding the right product for your skin.
