Best sunscreens for sensitive skin

02 Feb 2023 • 1 min read

Ensuring your skin stays healthy doesn’t have to be a tricky task – especially if you remember to use SPF. The sun’s rays have been proven to cause intense damage to the skin and cause premature ageing, which is why using sunscreen when you’re outdoors is essential. Unfortunately, having sensitive skin can be a bit of a hindrance when it comes to sun products. While they might protect you from the sun’s UVA and UVB rays, they can also cause redness, swellings or even nasty rashes1 . Not to worry, though, as there are many sunscreens out there which can safeguard your skin while ensuring it doesn’t get itchy and irritated in the process.

Choosing your sensitive sunscreen2

If your sensitive skin needs some sunscreen, but you’re wary about what to use, there are a few things you should know when selecting your ideal product. In general, the best sunscreens for sensitive skin:

Contain Gentle Formulas

The ingredients are the first thing to look for when it comes to buying sunscreen for sensitive skin. Particularly, chemicals that can be harsh on the skin. While they can be very effective at protecting the skin, they’re much more likely to cause irritation and bring your skin out in a rash. Instead, opt for a mineral-based sunscreen3 .

Without Synthetic Fragrances

Fragrances are often the number one cause of irritation because they’re typically alcohol-based. Although it’s nice to smell like a coconut when you’re lounging around on the beach, you’re better off steering clear of scented sunscreens unless they’re all-natural.

Still provide UV protection

While you’ll probably prefer to opt for a more natural sunscreen, it’s still vital that it contains certain ingredients which help reflect UV rays. Two things to look out for on the backs of bottles are active minerals like titanium dioxide and zinc oxide4 .
