Plankton microalgae is the first part of the food chain of the ocean and the predominant source of food for seahorses (thus Seahorse Plankton!).  Microalgae produce approximately 50% of the Earth’s atmospheric oxygen and uses CO2 to grow. It has evolved to protect itself from the environmental stresses and contains antioxidants, key vitamins and Omega fatty acids (in fact, all Omega 3 fatty acids in fish are accumulated through the consumption of microalgae). seahorseThis combination of powerful natural ingredients helps fight against dry skin and free radicals, which impact the structure of skin cells, especially collagen. They have detoxifying properties and slow the process of cellular ageing and as such, Microalgae is set to be the next big 100% natural skincare ingredient. Sustainable microalgae There are various sources of microalgae, one of which is obviously the ocean itself.  However, it is crucial to the biodiversity of the ocean and is essentially the lynchpin of the food chain, sourcing microalgae from here is neither environmentally friendly, ethical nor sustainable.  The abundance of Seahorses in the ocean is directly correlated to the amount of microalgae found in that area, so another great reason not to source from here! A far better source of plankton microalgae is from photosynthetic bioreactor fields (insert image attached).  These are huge greenhouses which produce a sustainable source of high quality, pollution free, microalgae and are actually designed to recycle the energy produced by the microalgae, so it’s carbon neutral too!  And best of all, they don’t have any negative impact on Seahorse’s habitats around the world.  Does it actually work? The plankton microalgae found in Beauty Kitchen’s Seahorse Plankton range is unique in that it also has compelling clinical evidence.  An in vitro study showed that the microalgae increased collagen synthesis in fibroblast skin cells by 19.3% in just 24 hours! graph1 As you probably already know, the degradation of collagen in our skin is a major reason for skin thinning, lines, wrinkles and sagging, so this proof got us very excited. What got us even more excited was the appearance of wrinkle reduction measured using the latest skin wrinkle topography measurement technology. This showed that over 2 months the appearance of wrinkles were reduced by 12%! And all of this from a 100% natural ingredient!  Just goes to show that you don’t need to compromise on efficacy if you choose the right natural products! Shop our Natural Beauty range.
