3 pregnancy basics you need to know

If you’re a mum-to-be, you’ll find that there’s so much information about pregnancy that it can sometimes seem overwhelming. With so many changes on the horizon before your baby arrives, we’ve made things simple with our guide to the ins and outs of pregnancy including sleepless nights and weight gain.

    1. You will gain weight during pregnancy

Don’t worry, this is healthy and natural. The weight you put on is partly water retention, placenta, amniotic fluid and, of course, your growing baby. In the UK, there are no official pregnancy weight gain guidelines. The amount each woman gains is different with most women putting on between 10kg and 12.5kg (22lb to 28lb).

    2. You don’t need to eat for two

You may feel like eating everything in sight, but you don’t need to eat more than usual. It’s more important to eat a healthy diet to help your baby grow and develop. Cut down on fatty or sugary foods like ice cream, biscuits and fizzy drinks. Instead, fill up on fruit, vegetables, wholegrains, lean protein, iron-rich foods and dairy products. And don’t forget to wash and prepare food safely.

    3. It’s normal to feel exhausted and low on energy

Hormonal changes mean many women feel tired. The perfect excuse to put your feet up, rest is the only remedy. Sleeping well may become more difficult as your bump grows bigger. Support yourself with pillows, and sleep however you feel most comfortable. If you find yourself struggling to sleep at night, try not to stress about it. Instead, catch forty winks during the day if possible.

Every pregnancy is unique, so take good care of yourself and you’ll be prepared to handle the next nine months until your new-born arrives.
