Wrinkling is the visible indicator of the ageing process, and lines on your neck are no exception. Although developing lines is, to a certain extent, unavoidable, you can reduce their appearance with preventative measures before they appear, and with targeted beauty products after the fact.
What causes neck wrinkles?
Lines are caused by skin ageing. How you age is determined by genetics, changes in hormones and metabolism, and environmental factors, including sun exposure, pollution, radiation exposure and toxin exposure.1
Although wrinkling is an inevitable consequence of being alive, these lifestyle factors can contribute to premature ageing:
- Sedentary lifestyle2
- Sun exposure3
- Exposure to pollution in urban environments5
- Repeated strain on one muscle group (caused by doing one repeatedly action consistently)6
How to combat neck lines
Reduce the appearance of fine lines with these effective beauty products:
Vitamin C serum
Vitamin C is an antioxidant, proven to help fight the effects of damage by UVA/UVB rays, as it deactivates cell-damaging free radicals which cause premature ageing.7 Use a Vitamin C serum for a minimum of three months to observe these effects.
Scientific studies have repeatedly proven the effectiveness of retinoids – of which the most commercially available form is retinol.8 Retinols reduce the appearance of wrinkles, dark spots, and smooth skin tone to banish fine lines.
Always test a retinol product 48 hours before use and start with a formula with a low concentration of retinol (around 2%), before working your way up to more potent formulas. This powerful active ingredient can cause irritation.
Always wear an SPF when using retinol products on the skin, as retinols can increase exposure to the sun.
One scientific study found moisturising the neck over three months reduced the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. The result was plumper and more youthful-looking skin.9
How to prevent neck lines
Stop lines before they start by taking these preventative steps:
Avoid text neck
Although we all enjoy spending our evenings crumpled up on the sofa with our phone, like many repetitive actions, repeatedly looking down at your phone can cause wrinkles.10 Put down the device when unnecessary and look straight ahead to avoid premature skin crumpling.
Sun damage is responsible for as much as 80% of all visual indicators of the ageing process.11 Although most of us now apply facial sun cream each day, it’s easy to neglect the neck – but don’t. Using regular sun protection early enough can stop wrinkles developing before they start.
If you’re a smoker, you don’t need to be told again how bad it is for your insides – but did you know that smokers have significantly more wrinkles than non-smokers?12 Save your neck and quit – your health and bank balance will thank you too.
