Ginger three ways

Ginger has been used for centuries in traditional medicines and as a home remedy, helping relieve the symptoms of everything from nausea to the common cold.

The reason ginger is so good for you is down to the bioactive ingredient in ginger root called gingerol, which is a potent anti-inflammatory compound.1 The best way to use ginger is fresh, as the fresh root contains the highest concentration of gingerol.

Here are three easy and delicious way to get more ginger in your life.

Fresh lemon, ginger and manuka honey tea

Ginger is a natural anti-spasmodic2 and can alleviate stomach cramps and nervous tummies. This delicious warming tea can also help soothe the symptoms of colds and flu.

Ingredients

  • 1 tbsp sliced or shredded ginger
  • 1 tsp of Manuka honey
  • Squeeze of fresh lemon juice

Method

  1. Add the ginger to boiling water, either in a saucepan, teapot or mug.
  2. Stir well and allow to brew for 10 minutes.
  3. Add a squeeze of fresh lemon and Manuka honey to taste.
  4. Either remove the ginger pieces and discard them, or drink as it is.

Ginger and soy stir fry

Ginger has diaphoretic properties meaning it raises your body temperature and promotes sweating.3 This zingy stir fry will be sure to add some fire to your evening meal.

Serves 4

Ingredients

  • 250g brown rice noodles
  • 1 tbsp coconut oil
  • 2 cups carrots, shredded
  • 1 cup broccoli florets
  • 2 green onions, finely chopped
Sauce:
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tbsp fresh ginger, grated
  • 1 tbsp honey
  • ½ cup Tamari soy sauce
  • 1 tbsp almond butter or cashew butter

Method

  1. Add all sauce ingredients together in a food processer and blend until smooth.
  2. Cook the brown rice noodles according to directions to pack. Drain from water.
  3. Heat the coconut oil in a large wok and stir-fry carrots, broccoli and onions until carrots begin to soften.
  4. Add in the noodles and sauce to the wok and cook until all of the ingredients are piping hot.
  5. Serve immediately for optimal flavour.

Ginger smoothie

This smoothie is the perfect tummy-friendly breakfast! Ginger has carminative properties, which means it can help ease digestion by helping to eliminate excess gas from our gastrointestinal tract.4

Serves 4

Ingredients

  • Handful of spinach or kale
  • 1 cup mango cubes
  • 1 peach
  • 1 lemon, juiced
  • 1 tbsp fresh ginger, minced or grated
  • ½ cup water

Method

  1. Add all ingredients to blender and blend together until smooth.
  2. Add more water or ice depending on your preferred consistency.
