How to take care of your skin on a plane

It doesn’t matter if you’re on a short flight to Spain or heading to the other side of the world to see what Australia has to offer, you’ll want to look after your skin so that you arrive looking refreshed and ready for adventure!

    Flying facts

Whatever your skin is normally like, flying will make it drier because of the low cabin humidity. Most people feel comfortable when humidity is between 40 and 70 percent but on a flight it can drop to just 20 percent. This can make your lips chap and your skin start to flake. To try and combat this, cleanse your face before take-off, drink plenty of water during the flight, apply a lip balm and moisturise your face. If you’re on a long haul flight and have oily skin, you might find that you end up with an acne breakout by the time you land as your skin will try to cope with the low humidity by producing more oil.

    Care for your hands

Your hands will feel dry too so it’s important that you use a hand cream before and during your flight. Planes aren’t the most hygienic of places, with tray tables carrying around eight times more bacteria than the flush button on a toilet, so you might want to take some hand gel and/or wipes with you. If the person next to you has a bad cold, you could always ask if it would be possible to move seats.

    Catch up on sleep

If you’re on a long haul flight or travelling overnight, you’ll want to try and get some sleep so that you’re not too drained when you arrive at your destination. Why not pack an eye mask in your hand luggage to help you drop off quicker? When you wake up, give your face a boost by using a facial mist and cleanse before reapplying your makeup. A little concealer can go a long way.
