Yes, they can be, as they both contain the same key ingredient – CBD.
CBD gummies usually contain hemp oil with a concentration of CBD, just like CBD oil and CBD capsules. This is then often combined with fruit juice, a gelling agent, and sometimes sweeteners.
You chew these supplements before you swallow them, so the way that the body absorbs the CBD is slightly different. By sucking on or chewing a CBD gummy, the CBD is absorbed into the lining of your mouth and, as such, enters your bloodstream faster than when swallowing a capsule or tablet. CBD oils and sprays work similarly as they enter the bloodstream through the lining of your mouth too.1
Like CBD oils or CBD capsules, you can choose the strength of your CBD gummies and control the dose by choosing how many you consume, ensuring you’re within the FSA’s acceptable daily limit of 10mg per day (for a 70kg healthy adult).
For CBD oils, you need to measure out your dose each time you take it. But, with CBD gummies, the dose is pre-measured, making them a more accurate, neater method of taking CBD.
What are the advantages of CBD gummies vs other CBD products?
CBD gummies have a variety of great advantages over other CBD products. Some of these include:

- they’re convenient: you can take them with you on the go!
- they taste better: CBD gummies are usually flavoured to make them more palatable
- they’re easier to control: you don’t need to measure out your drops, so you get an accurate dose every time
How many CBD gummies should I eat?
The general recommendation by FSA for all CBD supplements is to start with a dose that is smaller than 10mg, rather than start with the highest dose you can find!
Then, feel free to increase it bit by bit over time, until you find the best dose for you – making sure to never exceed the safe recommended daily allowance stated on the product label. If you want to calculate this for yourself, you can multiply your body weight in kg by 0.15 (e.g. 60kg x 0.15 = 9 mg per day.)2
Some gummies are one a day, some you take a few times a day. So, a good idea would be to start with half the recommended dose – and then if over time you think you’d like to try a stronger dose, buy a stronger concentration the next time.
Just remember to never exceed the recommended dose listed on the product packaging – each product will be different!
Can CBD gummies harm you?
CBD products are generally considered to be well tolerated and have a good safety profile by the World Health Organisation, documented in their Critical Review Report on CBD.
CBD isn’t suitable for pregnant or breastfeeding women, children, prospective parents trying for a baby, or people taking medication. Before using any CBD products, it’s also best to check with your GP that they’re safe for you to use and to make sure they don’t interact with any medication being taken.4
