There’s one arm of philosophy that states all you can ever truly own is the lump of meat and bones that carries your consciousness. At HFM we believe health and wellbeing lies in mastering this invaluable bit of kit. This issue has plenty of expert advice to help you make it to 2018 physically and mentally ready for anything. Winter has come, and with it a snow-storm of excuses to ditch the gym for the sofa. We’re not here to be a Buzz Killington, but we can provide an alternative to this seemingly inevitable decline in fitness with our guide to a healthy(er) winter on p16. How can you tell if you’re healthy? There should be an obvious answer, but if we’re constantly reaching for abs-made-of-iron and Usain Bolt sprints, it’s likely our expectations are slightly skewed. We investigate how to measure your health and found a surprising answer (p34).

Our leading men this issue seem to access a bottomless pit of energy, whatever the weather. With movies like The Dark Tower, and the successful BBC drama, Luther, Idris Elba is everywhere.
