For frequent flyers, jet lag can be very frustrating. It takes around a day for people to adjust to shifting one time zone. If you’re travelling across several time zones it can take even longer. It’s usually worse if you are travelling on easterly rather than westerly flights.
A big shift in time zones can leave our body and mind feeling just a little bit confused and out of sync. Jet lag can cause tiredness, loss of appetite, digestion issues and generally make you feel unwell. But don’t fret, there are ways you can help your body adjust and minimise the effects of jet lag. Here are some handy tips.
Get some sunlight
Upon arrival in your new destination, try and spend some time out in the sunlight. Daylight can help to regulate your body clock and reset your internal clock. Just make sure you head outside at the correct time, and avoid artificial light at night time, so that your body adjusts correctly.
Although hydration won’t ‘cure’ your jet lag, you will probably feel a lot worse if you are dehydrated. Drink plenty of water prior to your flight, on the plane and when you arrive and you will feel that little bit fresher.
Avoid caffeine and alcohol
The last thing you want to do is eat and drink things that will mess with your system even more. Avoid having too much caffeine as this will keep you awake; it’s important that you are able to drift off at the correct times. Alcohol may help you fall asleep, but it can cause a restless night’s sleep which will make your jet lag worse.
After a long haul flight and being on a plane for such a long time, your body will welcome some light exercise. Stretch out those legs and get some fresh air on a nice walk, your body will thank you for it.
Follow the new time zone
Upon arrival, where possible, try and stick to the new time zone. This means going to bed and waking up at the right times if you can. If you need a few extra naps that’s OK, but don’t overdo it so you can’t sleep at night.
