Essential oils for the bedroom – finding calm in your sanctum

Many essential oils are known for their relaxing qualities, so it makes sense to start in the bedroom. Studies exploring the relationship between essential oils and rest usually quote one scent in particular: lavender1. This beautiful-smelling botanical is said to reduce the body’s heart rate and nervous system, helping you to nod off at night. It’s the same for mandarin, bergamot and ylang-ylang – a sweet scent that’s native to India. All three are known for easing anxiety2. As for using them, if you’re looking for essential oils to help you sleep, it’s best to steer away from using candles or electric diffusers while you lay in bed. Instead, opt for a reed diffuser or pillow spray.

Bringing your living room to life

Essential oils are a personal choice, and nowhere is your personality usually more on show than in the living room. This is where you can experiment with different smells depending on the weather, what day of week it is or how you’re feeling. If you need a pick-me-up, peppermint or a citrusy scent can give you the zing you need. Similarly, if you’re feeling bunged up or stressed, tea tree has been known to be traditionally used as a natural decongestant3. As you’re likely to spend more time in your living room awake, both a scented candle and an electric diffuser are more than suitable. Introducing essential oils to your bathroom

Carrier oils are used to dilute stronger essential oils, making them safe to rub on your skin or pour in the bath.

And finally, can you use essential oils in the kitchen?

The short answer is yes. If your kitchen is prone to cooking smells or grease, and you don’t want to spray it with an artificial-smelling air freshener, essential oils can be a luxurious alternative. Again, a reed or candle is preferred here, as well as scents like lemon or clove oil which are perfect for breaking down toxins and neutralising fatty smells.

As with every oil on this list, experiment until you find a scent you love and don’t be afraid to blend similar smelling oils together.
