Glucosamine is a familiar name in the world of joint supplements – often paired with ingredients like chondroitin, collagen and hyaluronic acid. But what actually is it and does it make a difference?

We take a closer look at how glucosamine works in the body, where it comes from and what the research really says, with the help of Patille Joy Madaghjian, Registered Dietitian and Science Specialist at H&B.

What is glucosamine and its role in the body?

“Glucosamine is a naturally occurring compound found in your body, particularly in cartilage, the tissue that cushions and protects your joints,” says Patille.1,2

Think of cartilage as your body’s built-in shock absorber. It helps joints move smoothly and comfortably, especially when you’re active. Glucosamine plays a role in maintaining this tissue. It helps your body produce substances that support the structure and cushioning of cartilage, as well as the fluid that helps keep joints moving freely.2,3

Where does glucosamine come from?

In supplements, glucosamine is usually sourced from shellfish like crab or shrimp. There are also plant-based versions made from fungi, which can be a good option if you follow a vegan diet or have a shellfish allergy.5

Glucosamine hydrochloride vs sulphate: what’s the difference?

Once extracted, glucosamine is used in supplements in different forms – most commonly glucosamine sulphate and glucosamine hydrochloride.6 “While both forms provide glucosamine, they differ slightly in how they’re formulated and studied,” says Patille.

Glucosamine sulphate is the most widely researched form, especially in relation to osteoarthritis.2,7,8 Glucosamine hydrochloride contains more glucosamine by weight, but is less studied.2,6-8 Both forms are absorbed by the body, but most of the research around joint health has focused on glucosamine sulphate. That’s why it’s often the go-to choice in supplements.

Glucosamine for joints: does it work?

This is where things get a bit more nuanced. Glucosamine has been studied extensively – but mainly in people with osteoarthritis, a condition where joint cartilage gradually wears down.10,11 In these cases, some studies suggest glucosamine may offer small improvements in joint comfort and movement. However, results are mixed and not all studies show a clear benefit.10,11

“Most of the research has focused on knee osteoarthritis, with some studies also looking at the hip,” adds Patille. There’s also been some research looking at whether it can help prevent joint issues. For example, one study followed women aged 50–60 who were at higher risk of knee osteoarthritis but hadn’t developed it yet. Over two and a half years, they either followed a diet and exercise plan, took a daily glucosamine supplement, did both – or did neither.

The result? None of the approaches made a significant difference in preventing knee osteoarthritis.10 So, while glucosamine may help some people manage symptoms, it’s not a guaranteed way to stop joint issues from developing. When it comes to healthy, active adults, there’s less research overall. At the moment, there isn’t strong or consistent evidence showing that glucosamine improves joint health if you don’t already have joint concerns.2,7,8,12

Glucosamine and chondroitin: what do they do?

You’ve probably seen glucosamine and chondroitin used together, as they’re widely included in joint health supplements all over the world. We’ve covered glucosamine and how it works in the body – but what about chondroitin? “Chondroitin is also a natural component of cartilage and helps it stay cushioned and resilient,” says Patille. “It’s typically supplemented in the form of chondroitin sulphate.”8

So, while glucosamine supports the structure of cartilage, chondroitin helps it stay hydrated and better able to absorb impact. They’re often taken together for this reason, as a potential support for different aspects of joint health.

When it comes to research, both ingredients have been widely studied, particularly in people with knee and hip osteoarthritis. But, as with glucosamine alone, the results for chondroitin are mixed. Some people may notice improvements in comfort and movement, while others don’t see much difference. That means recommendations can vary depending on the source. 2,13,14

Does glucosamine work for joint health?

Glucosamine has been widely studied, particularly in people with osteoarthritis. Some research suggests it may help with joint comfort and movement, but results are mixed and not everyone experiences a noticeable benefit.2,7,8 When it comes to healthy, active adults, there’s less research available. At the moment, there isn’t strong evidence to show that glucosamine improves joint health if you don’t already have joint concerns.10,11
 

Can you take glucosamine with chondroitin?

Yes, glucosamine is often taken alongside chondroitin, and you’ll see them paired together in many joint supplements. In the body, they both play a role in supporting cartilage but in slightly different ways. That said, research on taking them as supplements together shows mixed results and any benefits can vary from person to person.2,13,15
 

The final say

Glucosamine is a natural part of your joint structure and plays a role in maintaining cartilage. As a supplement, it’s been widely studied – particularly in people with osteoarthritis – but results are mixed and benefits aren’t guaranteed. For healthy, active adults, the evidence is still limited. That said, some people do choose to include glucosamine as part of their routine, especially alongside other joint-supporting habits. If you’re considering it, think about your individual needs and remember that the foundations of diet, movement and overall lifestyle always come first.
