Our body’s use water in all its cells, organs and tissues to help maintain a stable temperature and enable it to function properly. And when you think how much of it we use through breathing, sweating and digestion, it’s easy to see why water is a core source of life.According to the NHS, we should be drinking between six and eight glasses of water every day.2 Here are five tips on how to stay hydrated all year round and help you reach this target.
Use a water bottle
Pick yourself up a BPA free water bottle and draw on some markings on the side (if it hasn’t got any already). This will give you targets to reach throughout the days at work or on the weekends. If you’re really keen, you could even put set times next to the markings to prompt you to drink it before you reach this part of the day.
Drink flavoured water
Let’s face it, tap water isn’t always the most exciting option to quench your first. So try infusing mint, fruit or ginger into it to bring it to life.
Don’t stick to just one bottle, purchase multiple to position in three areas you spend the most in throughout the day. For instance, on your desk at work, next to your bed and in the living room.
This way, you’ll always be just an arm’s length away from a refreshing beverage.

Eat certain foods
Hydrating foods like watermelon consists of around 92% water and homemade fruit ice lollies are a couple of great ways to stay hydrated. Just be careful how much you consume, as you don’t want to see your sugar levels shooting through the roof!
When ‘hungry’, drink
When your body is thirsty, sometimes we mistake it for hunger. So when you fancy a snack, drink a glass of water and see how you feel.
It’s also a great way to cut out unneeded calories throughout the day.
Avoid too much alcohol and caffeine
Both alcohol and caffeine are diuretics, often making you need to go to the toilet more. As a result, your body will be losing a lot more water.
If you can, try to reduce your consumption of alcohol and caffeine drinks to help your body feel more hydrated.
As water is very neutral, try having a glass of it instead of a beer, coffee or wine with your meal.
Unsweetened fruit juice is another top way of staying hydrated and counts as one of your five a day. However, with high sugar levels, you should stick to 150 ml per day.
To save some money and take you one step closer to your recommended intake, only fill one-quarter of your glass with fruit juice and top up with tap water.
