NAD+ is having a moment in the longevity world. But between liposomal NAD+, NR and a growing list of supplements, knowing what's what isn't exactly straightforward. So, what's behind the buzz, and how do the different options compare? H&B Senior Scientist Dr Laure Verstraeten helps us decode the NAD+ supplement shelf.
Here's where NAD+ supplements can get a little confusing. Some contain NAD+ itself, while others provide ingredients your body uses to make it. And then there's liposomal NAD+, which is all about how it's delivered. So, what's the difference?
NAD+ – this is the molecule itself which provide nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD+). Products can contain different amounts of NAD+, sometimes alongside other vitamins and minerals. Researchers are particularly interested in its role in cellular energy and ageing, although research in humans is still emerging
liposomal NAD+ – still NAD+, packaged inside tiny-fat based structures called liposomes. These are designed to help deliver ingredients through the body. Depending on the supplement, this may make it easier for the body to absorb1
NAD+ precursors – these don't contain NAD+ but instead provide compounds the body can use to make NAD+.2 One example is nicotinamide riboside (NR), a form of vitamin B3 that's also naturally found in milk2
The key difference is that it's not necessarily about which is better, but whether the supplement provides NAD+ directly, uses a different delivery method or gives your body the building blocks to make its own.
If NAD+ has piqued your interest, take a look at our supplement picks below. We’ll explain what makes each one special...
Our higher-strength capsules provide 300mg NAD+, ideal for those looking for more than our standard 100mg. But that’s not all. What sets this product apart from the other NAD+ supplements in the H&B range is its liposomal formulation – remember, that's a different way of packaging and delivering NAD+. Each capsule also contains vitamin C to support immune function, plus niacin, which contributes to normal energy-yielding metabolism (turning food into energy) and plays a role in reducing tiredness and fatigue.3,4,5
Want to add NAD+ to your daily multivitamin? Paused’s NAD+ Complete formula helps keep your supplement routine simple, with 500mg NAD+. But there's more than just NAD+. It brings magnesium and vitamins B2, B3 and B6 into the mix to support normal energy-yielding metabolism and help reduce tiredness and fatigue. Plus, folic acid, zinc and selenium all play a role in normal immune function.4-15 One serving packs in 100% of the daily reference amount for these nutrients, except magnesium.
If you prefer to keep things simple, our standard capsules might just be for you. Each one provides 100mg NAD+, alongside 100% of your daily niacin (vitamin B3) to support energy-yielding metabolism and the reduction of tiredness and fatigue.4,5 Just take one capsule per day with a meal.
Unlike the other three, the main ingredient is nicotinamide riboside (NR) instead of NAD+ itself. NR is a form of vitamin B3 that your body can use to make its own NAD+.2 Each capsule provides 300mg NR, alongside Siberian ginseng. You'll also find vitamin C and a blend of B vitamins including B2, B6 and B12, which help your body release energy from food.9,12,13,16-18 Plus, folic acid plays a role in reducing tiredness and fatigue.19
So, while the other three products provide NAD+ directly, this one gives your body a building block to make its own, alongside a mix of vitamins and botanicals.
Why not browse our other picks? The products below don’t contain NAD+ or NR, but they’re designed to support areas of healthy ageing like cognitive function and more.
Ever thought you’d add red wine to your supplement routine? Our H&B formula provides a concentrated resveratrol extract sourced from Japanese knotweed root alongside 10mg red wine extract.
Resveratrol is a naturally occurring plant compound belonging to the polyphenol family. It's found naturally in several plants and foods, including the skins of red grapes, which is why it's also associated with red wine. Here, resveratrol is supplied in a concentrated form alongside a smaller amount of red wine extract. Unlike the SOOO product, this is a more focused plant-compound formula rather than a combination of several different types of nutrients.
Need a refresher on co-Q10? It’s a naturally occurring compound found in almost every cell in the body where it plays a role in energy production. The highest concentrations of co-Q10 are found in energy-demanding organs like the heart, liver and kidneys.24 However, our bodies’ natural stores of co-Q10 can decline as we age.24
Our higher-strength capsules contain 200mg co-Q10 per serving (one capsule), as well as vitamin B1 (thiamin), which contributes to normal energy-yielding metabolism and normal function of the heart.25 Co-Q10 comes in two forms: ubiquinone and ubiquinol. They're simply two forms of the same compound, and your body can switch between them. This supplement contains ubiquinone.
NAD+ helps enzymes in your body to do their jobs efficiently.26 One of its most important roles is helping to convert nutrients from food into energy. On the other hand, NR doesn’t contain NAD+. It’s a precursor to NAD+, which means it provides ingredients the body can use to make it.2
Liposomal NAD+ provides NAD+, but in a liposomal formulation. Liposomes are tiny structures made from fats that are used as a way to deliver certain ingredients into the body. Depending on the supplement, this may make it easier for the body to absorb.1
When you’re choosing NAD+ supplements, you might want to consider:
whether you take NAD+ or NR
strength
any added ingredients
how many you’d prefer to take per day
standard vs liposomal formats
your budget
You should also speak to your GP before trying any supplements to make sure they’re right for you.
