Introducing Life Kitchen
We’re talking about taste-boosting ingredients and elevated meals! Experience sweet, sour, salty, bitter and umami flavours that’ll enhance your taste and smell.
Life Kitchen was born out of the desire to help people find flavour and pleasure in food again.
Ryan Riley is an author, cook and food stylist, while Kimberley Duke is a recipe developer, trained chef and is too a food stylist. Together, Ryan and Kimberley co-founded Life Kitchen.
“Our experience at Life Kitchen – which saw us create the world’s first cancer cookery school – means we know the profound impact that taste and smell has on our physical and mental health.” Ryan Riley.

Both Ryan and Kimberley were inspired to start Life Kitchen (a not-for-profit cookery school)
after losing parents to cancer.
During Ryan’s mum’s two-year battle with cancer, he saw how chemotherapy was affecting her ability to taste and experience food. Wanting to honour his mother’s memory, Ryan used his cooking skills to help other cancer patients find flavour and pleasure in food again.
Ryan shared “Our aim is to help as many people as possible enjoy food again. Sadly, we’ve seen first-hand how chemotherapy affected our parents’ ability to experience food and we’ve been on a mission ever since to change this.”
Cancer treatment
– and long Covid – has led several people to lose or experience changes to their taste or smell. Ryan and Kimberley recognised how tough this side effect is to people, and how it can make mealtimes difficult and isolating.
Both Ryan and Kimberley are thrilled to work with H&B to bring an innovative product range to the high-street. They’re excited to see the positive impact this range can have on those experiencing changes to taste and smell.
The collection has been designed to enhance the five basic tastes - sweet, sour, salt, bitter and umami.
Together, our internal culinary and science experts at H&B have worked with Life Kitchen under the guidance of Professor Barry Smith - founder of the Centre for Study of the Senses - to create six unique products.
Each product has taste boosting qualities. Meaning even if your taste and smell hasn’t been affected, you can use the products to enhance the flavours of any dishes you are creating too.
Miso White Chocolate & Raspberry
This moreish white chocolate bar offers a sweet but salty and savoury balance, which is both intense and satisfying.
Whether you choose to indulge in a few pieces in the evening for an after-dinner moment of bliss, get creative by baking up some tasty treats, or melt down and have your own fondue style dessert - this bar will please your tastebuds and your sweet tooth!
Sensation Salt
This salt blend will help to elevate your meals and create a full sensory experience.
Ideal for seasoning soups, broths, potato wedges or even your eggs on toast. This sharp, white pepper, sour citric acid and umami blend with taste boosting qualities will help you to get extra flavour and pleasure out of the food you enjoy.
Miso Honey
Enhancing the flavour of both sweet and savoury dishes; experience rich and decadent flavour notes with this miso honey.
Glaze, baste, bake, or mix. Whatever you choose, this miso honey is diverse. Perfect for dressings and marinades, as well as in tasty bakes. Or simply drizzle over ice cream!
Soy & Honey Umami Mushroom Paste
Looking for an immense taste explosion? Well, this paste made with soy sauce, honey and dried mushrooms will give you just that! The combination of these flavours work together to boost and intensify other ingredients in your dishes.
This paste offers a tasty way to marinade a protein or vegetable of your choice or enhance your sauces by stirring through. You could even try diluting the paste into an umami stock!
Super Sour Spritz, Lemon & Lime Vinegar
This citrusy spritz has been designed to create a multilevel sensory taste experience. The blend of ingredients and flavourings gives this sprayable vinegar a zesty and zingy taste-boosting twist.
Spritz and spray onto colourful salads, buddah bowls, tacos, potatoes, or a protein of your choice for a little extra depth and flavour profile.
Seed, Kale and Wasabi Seasoning
The bitter flavours are the unsung heroes of this seasoning blend, adding depth and intrigue to any savoury snacks and meals.
You could try adding a pinch to your rice and noodles, or sprinkle onto a jacket potato or some tasty, loaded fries.
You could also try it on poached or scrambled eggs, adding a bit of spice and texture to your breakfast.
